What if my mother or father doesn’t believe they have a problem but obviously could benefit from your services?

I would ask you to emphasize that everyone should exercise his or her mind on a daily basis and that the services I provide aren’t that much different than those provided by a personal fitness trainer. I would also ask you emphasize that the intent of my services is to simply increase cognition (memory, speed of processing, problem solving, attention, speech and language ability and IQ) and that training will increase a person’s independence, safety and quality of life. In addition, the exercises that I utilize are in no way designed or intended to be insulting or overly challenging. That would be counterproductive and a waste of everyone’s time.

My thinking isn’t that bad, so why should I go through your services?

Everyone should exercise his or her brain on a daily basis. I do my own exercises to keep my mind fit. A key motivator for me is that studies indicate that we decline after the age of 25; therefore, I want to do everything I can to keep my own mind fit. Because of this, I engage in many of the same exercises that I have my own clients do. And to be honest, I intend to reach new heights and want the same for you! Besides, I have seen firsthand what happens to people when they ignore their cognition. Inevitably, they will lose their independence and increase the odds of ending up in a nursing facility.

I am already doing exercises for my brain right now. I do crossword puzzles, play bridge and read. Shouldn’t that be sufficient to keep my mind active and sharp?

Those do have some benefit, and I applaud you for doing something. Yet, at the same time, these tasks are likely very easy for you and, because you have been doing them for so long, they are only providing a slight benefit. To keep what you have or to increase your mental faculties, you absolutely, positively need to challenge yourself in a well-planned and incremental manner that requires training from a skilled cognitive specialist. It is imperative that these exercises are deemed challenging and fun. Both of which I can supply with the vast amount of material that I use.

Will your program really prevent cognitive decline or help those who have it?

There are studies that have determined that when a person learns new material or is challenged cognitively in such a way that the brain is forced to adapt that yes, it does ward off/stop cognitive decline and/or increases a person’s mental faculty. It has also been determined that our brains are still pliable. Meaning, our brains can still learn and relearn over time with training. If I don’t think I can help you, then I won’t try to persuade you otherwise. I would also like to mention that with my training, one can build up what is termed “reserve,” which is essentially having the mental prowess to withstand or tolerate easier the damage or loss of neurons caused by a stroke or various forms of dementia that my occur.

How often should I exercise with you and on my own?

I recommend that you have, at minimum, two formal sessions with me per week and work two times on your own per week for best results. I will assist you with worthy homework assignments to augment the benefits of therapy.

What kinds of exercises would we do?

The exact exercises depend on the ability and the background of each client. Many of the exercises are derived from specialty workbooks, training cards and/or through computerized programs and websites. In addition, real-life issues/challenges will be addressed, excluding the actual hands-on handling of personal finances or medications that will, instead, be addressed through mock scenarios with my own supplies.

What code of ethics are you bound by?

Beyond my own personal code of ethics, I belong to three organizations. At the state level, we have the Colorado Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and at the national level, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Both of which have a long list of ethics I gladly abide by. Their websites are: www.cshassoc.org/ and www.asha.org/. In addition, Lastly, Medicare www.cms.org and Medicaid www.colorado.gov/hcpf have requirements that must also be upheld as well.

How long do I have to be in your program?

As we are being asked to exercise our bodies 3-5 times per week for the rest of our lives, I recommend the same rule of thumb for exercising our minds. However, if you ever reach the point where you wish to discontinue services, that is perfectly fine. I hope by then you will have confidently evolved into your own cognitive specialist! In addition, if you are accessing your insurance to pay for services, I must show that progress is being made and that benefit is being achieved. When that proves to no longer be the case, then I must discharge you from services. However, if you wish to continue despite such, then you would have to pay privately.

Do you have a money back guarantee if I am not satisfied?

If, upon completion of a session, you feel as if this is just not for you, and if you are required to pay a co-pay or are paying privately, you will absolutely not have to pay for that session. Yet, this will be with the understanding that no additional treatment will ever be provided again. Any additional refunds prior to that session, unfortunately, cannot be refunded.

How long before I see results?

This depends on a number of factors such as with the 7 rules to neural plasticity. All in all, we will be asking your brain to do something that it is not accustomed to doing, and it will offer some resistance. What I can tell you is that you have made a great first step in beginning the process of brain transformation for the better and that progress will occur! Yes, let me repeat, progress will be made. Again, if I don’t think I can help you, I will be perfectly honest with you.

How much are your services?

As the majority of my patients are Medicare and Medicaid, I am only permitted to bill what is allowed by those programs. If you should be private pay, then sessions range from $75 and up depending on the length of the session. Private pay sessions are required to pay upon completion of session, as are co-pays.

How long are your sessions?

Sessions are a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 90. It depends on what you can handle and prefer.

Can family members be present?

Absolutely! But I ask that they be respectful and allow me to guide the treatment.

When do you accept appointments?

This all depends on logistics.

How will training help me in my day-to-day activities?

Prescribed cognitive training will increase your attention, memory, speed of processing, problem solving ability, and confidence, which are guaranteed to carry-over into everything you do. Your fluid intelligence or IQ will increase over time because you will be able to think more logically, analyze problems more effectively, identify patterns, and determine relationships.

Are there long term benefits of training?

Well-planned cognitive training will build up what is called “reserve.” In other words, if the precision training is carried out as prescribed, neuropathways will be strengthened or even created from new cells, which will, in turn, vastly increase the number of overall neurons. This increased amount of connections will benefit those who have suffered from a stroke, a mild form of Alzheimer’s, mild to moderate cognitive impairment, and/or those who just want to increase their mental prowess. By engaging in a well-structured program from a specialist, we are reshaping the neural connections. This glorious process is called neural plasticity, and it can occur at any age!
