Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can be characterized as either an “open” or “closed” injury to the head. An open head injury involves an object penetrating both the skull and the brain itself which results in an obvious wound. A closed head injury does not result in an open wound but can still certainly be debilitating in that cognitive and language skills are dramatically affected. Damage is generally at the point of impact known as a “coup” injury and the opposite side known as a “countercoup” injury. This occurs when the brain bounces back to the opposite side. Such can lead to bleeding (Hemorrhage), Swelling (Edema), Seizures, Imbalance of Cerebrospinal Fluid (Hydrocephalus) and Infection.

Valuable TBI Information: To some extent, the entire brain is adversely affected. As one can expect, there are many variables as to the degree of damage and is dependent on the amount and direction of the force. This can be characterized as being mild, moderate or severe. The duration in which one suffers varies widely and can last a few days, weeks or months and in some cases may be permanent. Cognitive training involves the restoration, compensation, and/or adaptation with regards to the determined deficits. Even with the best medical care, such can result in the individual having many problems. As a result, an entirely different person may emerge after the injury. No two people are exactly alike. A cognitive training program must be tailored for each individual and a qualified therapist must take into consideration the personality, behavior, education, work history and overall interests. With the myriad of considerations, assessment of the individual should be in tandem with treatment. The ultimate goal is to return the person back to their previous level of function. In some cases, the individual has surpassed their previous levels!
